Cedar Waxwing d

The 22nd of Feb. (2015) We have had a group of migratory robins hanging out around here and they frequent the crab apple tree, sometimes numbering more than 20. On such an occasion, as I was studying the group for photo ops, I noticed a bird nonchalantly sitting among the robins I had not seen before except in books. I knew the name in part because I remember how much I loved the coloration of this bird. I've seen many photos of the wax wings on Deviant Art before. I assumed it was not from around here but as it turns out it is very common in most of the southern half of the U.S. during the winter months. I was fortunate enough to get these photos (during a snow storm) before they flew off. The crop of hair on their heads moves up and down, rather like cardinals. The red accent is such a pleasant surprise but not always visible. The mask (or sunglasses) making it the racoon of the bird world. I felt truly fortunate to get these photos and I thank the robins, in part, because the robins were totally unafraid of my presence and I believe it gave the cedar wax wings confidence to stay put as well. merhlin.deviantart.com/gallery…
